An ipod is for music?

I have at times suffered from a certain amount of persecution from my musically educated friends for having an ipod almost exclusively dedicated to the spoken word. Invariably when someone asks what I am nodding my head rhythmically too while walking along the road it will be Melvin Bragg talking about anti-matter or Charlton Heston reading a script on Nietzsche (yeah he really did record philosophy scripts).

While my friends can get me listening to the odd thing, as evidenced on ‘Current Soundtrack’, I am really not very musically together. So I thought that for any nerds out there like me (and if you read this blog there is a reasonable chance that I am talking to you) I would offer a sample of interesting podcasts and websites which I visit to download talks.

If you have any for me I love to hear about them in the comments!

    Hey Pete

You might be interested in The Spirit of Things (kind of like an Australian version of APM: Speaking of Faith that comes from a similar perspective).

My all time fave podcast is Zen is Stupid. Maybe not quite so highbrow as the others u mentionned… but fun nevertheless! You might enjoy it…

    - “RadioLab” http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/
    - and if you want to bone up a bit on music, “Sound Opinions” out of Chicago Public Radio
    - and how can you go wrong with “This American Life”?

Pete, i’m not really all that surprised you listen to philosophy stuff on your ipod. BUT, you have introduced me to some really cool music over the years and i think you should be more balanced and have both rather than either/or! LOL!!!! Adele

I produced a live recording with Charlton Heston years ago with a major symphony orchestra. He was reading Shakespeare and (somehow..) forgot to turn the page, started over, read the same page twice and didn’t realize it. Threw off the entire performance.

Podcasts I frequent: Len Sweet, Krista Tippett, LongNow.org… Like you, my MP3 player is virtually all spoken word.

  5. Brett Says:

I’ll try and check a few of these out. nice.

    Cheers

Hmm, good looking list there Pete, some stuff I’ll definitely have to check out.

You might be interested in The Veritas Forum, which has lots of talks worth listening to, even if they might be a little too foundationalist for your tastes. The talks skew towards apologetics, but there’s a good variety of stuff there if you dig a little deeper.

  7. Michael Del Monte Says:

This is an awesome list! I’d add one of my favourite current philosophers: Peter Kreeft.
He looks a lot at C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Aquinas…

He takes up a good portion of my iPod

  8. Existential Punk Says:

You people who have a majority of philosophy and spoken word on your ipods need more balance in your lives! LOL!!! ;) All talk makes a boy dull!!! HEEEHEEEHEEEEEEE!!!!!! Enjoy your words!

I echo what Adele says – a good chunk of what I listen to is downloaded from Proost – I find what when I listen to this music as I’m reading from my ever increasing pile of books while I travel, I absorb the material on a multiplicity of levels.

  10. Lisa C Says:

Thinking Allowed on Radio 4 also had an interesting interview with Zizek on violence (9th Jan). Just a thought.

  11. Nicholas Says:

I think it’s a good list. I was disappointed not the see The Nick and Josh Podcast on that podcast list. But everyone knows iPod’s were made for lectures and podcasts not music. Duh!!

How about Charelton Heston reading the Kipling poem ‘If” – transcendent.

  12. Michael Haggard Says:

http://www.thekindlings.com/ has a great stuff, right up your alley.
In fact, it was the Kindling Muse and places that it sent me that helped me to find you.

    A couple more:
    1) Big Ideas
    2) CBC’s Ideas

Both have podcasts findable in iTunes…

You might like ABC (Australia) Radio National’s weekly show, “The Philosopher’s Zone.” Such gems as “Buffy the Concept Slayer” and “Beautiful one day, Metaphysical the next.”
