    Pete,

I didn’t know where to else to post this. But, I was curious if you’ve gotten your hands on Zizek and Milbank’s new book. In Zizek’s response to Milbank he makes a detour through Caputo and Vattimo’s book After the Death of God. I was excited that this engagement (albeit it small) finally takes place. Knowing your interest in both Caputo and Zizek’s work, just curious about your thoughts

    Hey Pete,

Yeah I did, just finished it last night. Thankfully, Zizek doesn’t merely reiterate all of his points from his main three religious texts, although there is some repetition. Mostly he fleshes out his Hegelian/atheistic Christology. Somewhat reminds me of Altizer but with more of a Lacanian twist. Honestly, I had a tough time following Milbank’s response, but that’s because he’s a difficult writer. Fortunately, Zizek had the last word and his defense against Milbank better clarified Milbank’s thesis. In the end Zizek’s extended engagement with Chesterton, his critique of Caputo/Vattimo, and his radical Chiristology were very entertaining. He even develops more fully his point about atheism and belief and ultimately argues that atheists are defined by a renunciation of a belief in the Big Other, and discusses Lacan’s formula idea God is the Real.

Most definitely there is a struggle, and it goes beyond traditional religious boundaries (heck, it goes beyond boundaries full stop).

The latest stage in the civil rights struggle: the right to tell your own story – the right not to be defined by anyone else’s.

This against the backdrop of the Information Age, the Biotechnological Age, the age where your very identity is open to intrusion, to a level never before seen.

To our shame, Christians have stood on both sides of the Abolition movement, both sides of the Suffragette movement – and we’ve seen, consistently, that what wins through is greater freedom and love.

So this is a call to spiritual arms, unequivocally: fight for the freedom for all of us to express our identity as we understand it, however ‘normal’ or not others perceive it to be. Otherwise that freedom (and all other freedoms previously won) will be lost.

    Prophetic Easter message! Don’cha think?
