Neither Jew nor Greek…
I am currently taking part in ‘The Great Emergence’ conference in Memphis. The keynote speaker is Phyllis Tickle, who is just fantastic. The conference has pulled together some of the key players on the US scene in relation to emergent thought and praxis. It feels like a significant marker in the movement and it is a privilege to be part of the conversation.
Most of the participants are taking part in a presentation approach in which we present 15 slides with 20 seconds to speak per slide. This means that we have to communicate an idea in 5 mins 20 secs. I choose to speak on the theoretical idea of suspended space. Below are the 15 slides I used (I didn’t speak for 20 secs per slide but rather used these slides as a background to my point… these have also been speeded up). My presentation was recorded, so if I can get my hands on it I will post it up.

Thanks for the slides. I hope you can post the recorded presentation, too.

Dividing lines, eh? Problematic to say the least and riddled with imperfection.
Thanks very much for this – you are so challenging, relevant, inspiring and you have such a brilliant mind.

Was at the conference and heard you.
You were brilliant.
Have been battling with the same ideas.
I like the idea that God is nothing.
Did you mean that hidden presences in creation are tangible meaningful evidences of God ?

i understand that our identity is in Christ and we should not be defined by labels. BUT, Pete, how do we reconcile this without losing our own personal identities and being honest where life is for us? i am thinking of my chronic illness in particular. How do i be honest as to where i am in my health and limitations but not be defined by it? Any help in explaining this existential angst would be grand!
Reading these are freeing yet challenging at the same time. Life is but a journey in learning how to finesse living in simultaneous planes of human and spiritual lives. It’s a tension that is hard to walk.
i hope i make some sort of sense.

Pete, that was an amazing presentation at the conference. I did not think you could possibly speak any faster that you already do, but you proved me wrong!
Hey, you had left just prior to the closing session with Phyllis where she mentioned your book as an “essential read” for this Great Emergence conversation going forward. Not a bad recommendation!
Keep in touch!

Pete,
Any chance you’d be willing to send me the slides from your presentation? I loved the way you fleshed out the passage and would like to show it to our church community (www.connectionschurch.ws) this Sunday if possible.
Thanks,
Fred

I just stumbled upon your site, saw a few of your vids and really dig what your saying about the the who idea of embracing struggle and being willing to wrestle out traditions and theology. I was hoping you could share with me the conversation that works along with this slide. Sorry i missed the presentation

Hey… thanks for stopping by. The presentation I did was from notes so there is nothing as yet written down (though I am writing on this idea of suspended space at the moment (and am guessing there might even be a previous post on it somewhere, if you could be bothered looking). You could have a look at John Caputo’s last chapter in What Would Jesus Deconstruct as that talks about ikon as a suspended space. That might help. Thanks again. p
